Under the direction of Conway Jones, the children, youth and adult choirs have brought Centre Stage Productions a reputation that travels well beyond our small island of Mallorca.

They have appeared on BBC and ITV television in the UK, and are known and respected by some of the greatest names in musical production today.

As a BBC producer said, after seeing their first production of Godspell, way back in 1997, “You wouldn’t get better on the London stage”.

Oklahoma

Centre Stage Productions Youth Theatre are staging the comedy musical “Oklahoma” in the Sala Mozart of the Auditorium, Palma, on Saturday 13th and Sunday 14th of March at 5pm (17.00).
Oklahoma was the musical comedy that first brought together the talents of Rodgers and Hammerstein.

They went on to write nine successful musicals, a figure surpassed by Palma’s own Bateman and Jones, Mr Robert and Mr Conway, who have been bringing musical theatre to the Mallorca stage since 1997.

Finishing touches are being applied to the scenery and songs and dialogue perfected as the young actors and actresses work hard to maintain the Company’s fine reputation.

For many years Oklahoma held the record as the longest-running Broadway musical and Centre Stage Youth Theatre will be performing this story of love lost and found on the prairies and ranches of the Wild West, in English.

Hit songs include, “People Will Say We’re In Love”, “Surrey With A Fringe On Top” and “I’m Just A Girl Who Can’t Say No”...and she doesn’t!

Tickets are now available from Robert Bateman on 971 22 15 30 and are priced at 12 Euros for adults and 10 Euros for children.

Please book early, with two weeks to go the tickets for this Youth Theatre production are already selling quickly.

Centre Stage Junior Company

The Juniors will be bringing the musical “Trouble in Titipu” to the Sala Mozart in The Auditorium on the Paseo Maritimo in Palma, on Saturday 2nd and Sunday 3rd of May, at 6pm (18.00hrs).

Tickets priced at 12 Euros.

The musical is based on the Gilbert and Sullivan work, “The Mikado” and adapted in English by Robert Bateman, although all the songs will retain their original format.
Centre Stage Juniors is for six to twelve year olds with support appearances from young people who have recently progressed to the Youth Theatre Group.

They bring a mix of the very young and excited children for whom this is their first appearance in a “Big” Theatre and the experience of those who have progressed to grander things.

At Centre Stage, music and song is their foundation and strength under the direction of Conway Jones with acting and dance only taking the stage when the music has been perfected.

Although very young, these children are in great demand at celebrations and exhibitions throughout the year where their choral work has become well known and respected.

The highlight of the childrens year is their appearance at the celebration of the Queen’s birthday by invitation of the British Consul and the Christmas Ecumenical celebration at Palma Cathedral where they show off their prowess to well over 1500 spectators.

The recent Youth Theatre Revue was a sell out very quickly, so for information or to reserve your tickets, please call Robert Bateman on 971 22 15 30

“Aladino”
Aladdin and the Magic Lamp.

The chorus and dancers of Centre Stage Productions will be presenting the typical British Pantomime “Aladino” at the Sala Mozart in Palma on Friday 23rd, Saturday 24th March at 20.30 and on Sunday 26th at 18.30.
Translated into Spanish, tickets are priced at 12 Euros and are on sale at the Auditorium Box Office now.

The story of “Aladino” is one of the most popular of all the British Pantomimes which have been a feature of Children’s Theatre in Great Britain for over five hundred years.
Pantomime is a children’s fantasy world where the “goodies” always beat the “baddies”and the poor, but handsome, hero always wins the heart of the beautiful Princess.
The Evil Bad Fairy tries her hardest to break the lover’s hearts, but the Good Fairy, with the help of cheers from the children watching, wins her battle.

And if the children come in their favourite fantasy costume, the Fairy has even greater powers.
Set in China, Aladino is a wonderful opportunity for children of all ages and nationalities to experience the wonder and laughs of typical children’s British theatre.

Jesus Christ Superstar Mallorca
One week to go and things are hotting up here.
Centre Stage Productions had their first rehearsal and sound check with the orchestra last Saturday.
7 Musicians, many of them old friends, went through their paces with Musical Director Conway Jones.
The soloists used stand microphones on this occasion, but on the night they will all wear body mics. No action for the rehearsal, just sound checks.
We take the Sala Mozart over at The Auditorium next Tuesday. First job is to position the dozens of lights needed to complement the sets and costumes in this exciting production.
On Wednesday the stage will be laid out and then the lights set into their final positions.
Then comes the set which will be built during the day.
I'll let you know more about the plans for the Auditorium in future blogs, suffice to say for the moment, the cast are raring to get in there.
Carlos and his dancers were in rehearsal last night at the studio. They are looking great...and sooo raunchy. You're in for some fun choreography.
In the run up to the show I'll keep you up to date with how things are progressing...maybe help you have some of the fun reading about it, as we are having getting ready.
By the way, Danny had been out last night hunting down the finishing touches to his costume!
It suits you Danny!!!

ANOTHER WINNER
OLIVER

First off, congratulations to Centre Stage Youth Theatre. Oliver was great, a sell-out and really good fun.
Lots of talent, some wonderful singing and loads of enthusiasm.
Alex who played Nancy, seen here in the red dress, brought us two unscheduled laughs.
The first on the Saturday when the lights came on from a stage blackout, and there was Alex looking like a sprinter leaving the starting traps.
Having just been murdered, she was caught in the middle of getting up and trying to leave the stage!
She froze...she'd still be in that position now if there hadn't been another, unscheduled, blackout for her to exit gracefully!
The audience enjoyed the fun and even applauded when they realised what had happened.
The second was on the Sunday when the script called for a bottle of drink to be poured out. No bottle!
So Alex, breeding will show, adlibbed..."Oi, where's the bloody gin?"
That dear audience is why the cast got a fit of the giggles and Alex got a slap from mummy after the show!
Next production for Centre Stage is Jesus Christ Superstar on 21st, 22nd and 23rd of THIS MONTH.
Please make sure of your tickets. Centre Stage now sell out for virtually all performances. The only way to be sure of a ticket is to buy them early. Someone contacted Centre Stage office earlier this week to complain that the seats he wanted had already gone...for all 3 performances. As usual, you have been warned.
Tickets are available at The Auditorium Box Office in Palma, Paseo Maritimo and branches of Servicaixa in Mallorca.

CHANNEL IB3 ARE FIRST!

Last night Baleares TV channel IB3 came along to rehearsals for Jesus Christ Superstar.
The first time the cast have performed any of the show in public.
And it really is as good as the rehearsals have said it would be.
The many months of rehearsals showed in the quality of the performance when all three disciplines came together in front of an audience.
The excitement of the song, the dance, the drama of this wonderful musical were there for all to see.
With just over three weeks until opening night, this was the first of many previews you'll be able to enjoy on television and radio here in Mallorca.
The finishing touches are under way to what promises to be yet another sell-out success for Centre Stage Productions.
Tickets are on sale now at the Auditorium, Paseo Maritimo in Palma and SEVICAIXA branches in Mallorca.
And from the whole company..."Break a leg" to Centre Stage Youth Theatre and their production of Oliver at the Auditorium this weekend...see our stars of the future, on stage now.

Jesus Christ Superstar
Looking good, and sounding...wow!
If Centre Stage Productions presentation of Jesus Christ Superstar don't make your toes curl and bring a tear to your eyes, then nothing will.
The singing, under the direction of Conway Jones, is incredible, and that in a small rehearsal studio without the orchestra and sound quality that there will be in the Auditorium, Palma in April.
All the weeks of just rehearsing the choir, before a move was staged is now paying off.
And Centre Stage are, and always have been, a choir at the heart of the company. It's this quality and depth of talent that comes to the fore when shows like Jesus Christ Superstar are staged.
Add to this the expertise of Director Robert Bateman bringing out the best in the the drama and settings...Carlos Diaz choreographing the dance and you have the ingredients for another hit musical.
In the next few days, the first pictures of the rehearsals will be on the Centre Stage website at http://www.med-liv.com (follow the links at the top left of the page)

Saturday, March 11, 2006

Once a show has been decided on and permission obtained from the shows owners the work starts.
Jesus Christ Superstar is no different. First the choir rehearses under the watchful ear(?) of Musical Director Conway, many hours are spent getting the sound just right.
This is the time when auditions are held for the principals, dancers and other featured parts...always very competitive.
There's a great team spirit at Centre Stage, so once the parts have been filled the lucky, and the not so lucky, pull together to get the show on to the stage. We have the choir sounding pretty good now, and the next job features Robert the Director...actually setting the show.
In the picture here Jesus and Mary, Javi and Tor, backed by some of the chorus are rehearsing one of the songs.
Dance routines are well under way now, and the dancers are being brought into the the scenes.
They've had loadsa practice..but one of the funniest sights is watching the chorus, who support the dancers, trying to pick up the routine whilst singing and acting. I still say there should be two large signs on the mirrors in the front...one saying right...the other left...but who listens to me? Watch out for the dance pics...
